NAJIT Academy: Introduction to Court Interpreting for Japanese Interpreters

Description

Introduction to Court Interpreting for Japanese Interpreters: Skill Building and the Code of Ethics (target language: Japanese)
This 120-minute, Japanese-specific webinar is designed for highly proficient bilinguals and newly professional translators and interpreters who wish to acquire and build on the core skills and mindset necessary for becoming a successful legal interpreter. In particular, we will focus on practicing, constructively self-assessing, and refining our technique for stellar delivery of the three modes of court interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation). We will warm up with some essential drills (such as expanded sequence, shadowing, dual-tasking, and chunking), then practice some brief role-play scenarios in small groups and learn how to offer precise, constructive feedback to each other and ourselves so we can improve whether we have study partners or not. We will also familiarize ourselves with the NAJIT Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibilities, as that will guide and protect us in the course of providing linguistic support as officers of the court. Attendees need to bring a recording device (e.g., a smartphone), lined notepad (plain paper in a pinch), and pencil or pen.
